    My grandmother used to protect her garden by laying old blankets over the plants. Miladel and Dan had great luck extending their growing season by building that hoop house with PVC pipe and rods into the ground, which they covered with a plastic tarp.     My sister cooked up some of our swiss chard (which has similar characteristics to kale) with some slow-sauteed garlic and red onions and mushrooms in olive oil.
